Qatar has a modern road network that links the capital city, Doha, with the rest of the country. The State constantly keeps on maintaining this network and upgrading it. It also works on providing the best public transportation services to keep pace with the population growth and the country's huge development at various levels as well as the broad modernization in the structure of the urban planning of the capital Doha and other cities.

The State of Qatar attaches in its budget great importance to the road network. Every year, tens of road projects are proposed within the framework of the transport sector development and modernization plan. In the past few years the percentage of spending on road projects reached 45% of the total cost of projects in the transport sector.

Anyone visiting Doha and patrolling its streets at the present time would notice the relentless movement in the transport sector and the large number of projects related to road modernization and expansion, building bridges and tunnels to facilitate the traffic flow and accommodate the growing numbers of the vehicles. While several large projects were completed prior to the Asian Games held in Qatar in 2006, work continues for the completion of other projects within the framework of a comprehensive construction plan.

In addition to internal road network modernization and development, preparations continue to establish a second land entry to the country. Besides the international highway which links it with Saudi Arabia, a bridge will be built to link Qatar with the Kingdom of Bahrain.
