Sports in Qatar have taken big strides in recent years as reflected in the impressive performance of various Qatari teams that participated in regional and international contests. Qatar succeeded in hosting and organizing several tournaments which made it an important venue for international sporting events.

Sports activities receive considerable support from both government and public. The hosting of the Asian Games in 2006 was the culmination of Qatar’s sports achievements.

Sports movement in Qatar started during the fourties of the 20th century, and sports and youth establishments continued to develop and evolve through various shapes and organizations until they finally came to rest on their present status, topped by the General Authority for Youths and the Qatar National Olympic Committee (QNOC).

Qatar began to give due attention to sporting activities and youth affairs in the 1970s when the present Emir of Qatar H.H Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani was the Heir Apparent.  He took the initiative to set up several sports clubs which were equipped with modern facilities and the results were there to be seen as Qatar asserted its supremacy in different sporting disciplines.
