Doha, March 09 (QNA) - Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) has received 960 thousand dollars from the government of Qatar to help solve the current food crisis in Niger. Qatar''s support also included a financial contribution of one million dollars to support the QRCS project for agricultural production that aims to promote self-sufficiency in food, the QRCS said in a statement issued Tuesday. Qatar''s donation comes as part of its support for Niger since 2005 when it backed the QRCS to address the then food crisis. Qatar has also mobilized support for Niger by organizing a donor conference in Doha in 2007 in cooperation with the Organization of the Islamic Conference to achieve the goal of food self-sufficiency in Niger, the statement added. Almost half of Niger''s population suffer from a lack of sufficient stocks of food for 10 days continuously since December 2009. The QRC prepared an urgent project for food security for one year based on the provision of emergency food aid, the establishment of grain warehouses and food distribution to the affected families in villages. The project also focuses on the distribution of seeds and fertilizers to farmers near the River of Niger in order to enable them increase production and plant additional areas to avoid the failure of the agricultural season which starts next June. Niger is the poorest country in the world and the least developed countries according to the indicators of the United Nations Development Program. Muslims in Niger represent more than 95 percent of the total population. (QNA)
