Cairo, August 20 (QNA) - The Arab League has welcomed the decision of the Scottish government to free convicted Lockerbie bomber Abdel Basit al-Megrahi and praised efforts made by Qatar in securing the release of al-Megrahi and his return to Libya.
In a statement to Qatar News Agency (QNA), Ahmad bin Hilli, Arab League Deputy Secretary-General, said: We welcome the decision which took into account al-Megrahi health condition."
He underscored the importance of the Qatari efforts saying: "Qatar diplomatic efforts have been successful in several Arab issues.
It is worth mentioning that Qatar in its capacity as the current president of the Arab Summit had sent a letter to the government of Scotland calling for the release of al-Megrahi. It also sent a high-level delegation to Scotland to meet with the Scottish officials and al Megrahi. (QNA)
