Doha, June 07 (QNA) The peace negotiations on Darfur were resumed Monday at the Doha Sheraton Hotel in presence of the mediation and delegations of the Sudanese government and the Libration and Justice Movement. HE the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Ahmed bin Abdullah Al Mahmoud addressed the gathering and welcomed the two parties''delegations for the resumption of the Darfur peace negotiations in a bid to reach a just peace in the troubled region of Darfur and the entire Sudan. HE Al Mahmoud hailed the visit to Doha by the two Sudanese delegations and their interest in achieving peace, pointing that this meeting is held after April''s elections in Sudan, which ended up with choosing whom the voters believed was ideal for running presidency in Sudan in the next phase, congratulating every one on the results. '''' Peace and stability are very significant in this sisterly country, which we don''t see its significance only for the Arab world, but for the African continent as well, so, we welcome you at this meeting to come out with a method and a base for negotiation.'''' HE Al Mahmoud noted. HE the Minister stressed that Qatar and the joint mediation as will remain open for all, saying'''' we do not distinguish between a party to other party, but our goal is to bring peace, our goal is to reach the truth and to reach what you want. Therefore, I hope, along with Bassole and the State Qatar, to never let you down.'''' '''' As I said, we, as the host country for the talks, HH the Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, has always made clear directives for us to work as hard as possible to bring about peace and development in Darfur and to push forward the development along with politics and negotiations. This is what we do and we are looking for.'''' HE Al Mahmoud added. Concluding his speech, HE the Minister thanked Sudan''s government delegation and the LJM for their attendance and their concern with the people of Darfur and keenness to make these talks a success.
For his part, the joint mediator of the African Union and the United Nations Djibril Bassole expressed his satisfaction over the resumption of Darfur peace negotiations and the commitment of the delegations of the Sudanese government and the LJM by coming into Doha as a place to negotiate and to sit face to face in the direction of bringing peace in Darfur. Bassole also expressed hope that those who are still carrying weapons and believe that war is their choice, will be joining the negotiations in order to succeed in this endeavor, adding that mediation will remain open to all parties to negotiate on the road to peace in Darfur, expressing hope that the civil society will also be involved. He said he will visit tomorrow, Tuesday, the city of Nyala, capital of South Darfur, before heading to New York to provide a briefing to the Security Council on the Darfur peace process in Doha and its accompanying activities. Bassole underlined the important role of the civil society so the result of the Doha talks will end up for the interest of the people of Darfur. He pointed out that the agenda includes a lot of details, saying'' we will continue to be flexible so that we can move forward and discuss important issues for all of us all too quickly reach concrete results''''. Elaborating the joint mediator of the African Union and the United Nations said the mediation hopes that fighters who agreed to lay down their arms will bear their responsibilities and be integrated into the government forces or choose their own way in the civil and social life, calling for a rapid and successful implementation of a ceasefire, stressing that the benefits of peace should be felt by the people of Darfur in their daily lives.
Dr. Amin Hassan Omar, head of the Sudanese government negotiating team, in his speech, he voiced optimism about progress to be a major success in this round of the Doha Platform towards reaching peace in Darfur, despite the Justice and Equality Movement (EJM) position of the negotiating process. He noted that this optimism was motivated by the great participation of people of Darfur in the general elections held in Sudan in April who confirmed their interest in the political solutions and peaceful circulation of power and not through military conflict. Dr. Hassan Omar also said one reason for optimism for the success of this round also the consensus of the international community on the need for a speedy and definitive solution in Darfur. In this context, he stressed the presence of a single initiative, and one forum which is the Doha Platform to the Darfur peace, involving all parties concerned, including the people of Darfur themselves and civil society aimed at strengthening the mediation efforts through this national and international consensus. Dr. Amin Hassan Omar said Khartoum accepts these negotiations with sincere desire and goodwill, with a view to pushing for a comprehensive and final peace in Darfur of which all are winners, starting from the Framework Agreement which was agreed upon by the Sudanese government and the Liberation and Justice Movement (LJM) last March . Then, Dr. Amin Hassan Omar reviewed the issues to be discussed with the Liberation and Justice Movement (LJM) including the security arrangement in order to reach the final agreement until the holders of arms be part of the solution and the factors for promoting security in Darfur, stressing that was a priority to accelerate the pace regarding this matter. He praised the initiatives of the HH the Emir of the State of Qatar, government and people towards Sudan in general and its efforts in order to reach a final and just solution to the problem of Darfur, saying : We have sensed that from warm receptions of HH the Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, as well as HE the Prime Minister and Foreign minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jabor Al-Thani, and their genuine desire and good faith in pushing forward the negotiations and their efforts for making directly matters of the economic development better for the people of Darfur He also expressed his sincere thanks to HE the Minister of State for foreign affairs Ahmed bin Abdullah Al Mahmoud, and the UN-AU Joint Mediator Djibril Bassole for their tireless efforts and patience on this process.
