Al-Mahmoud: Darfur Peace Negotiations to Resume in Last Week of May

Doha, May 16 (QNA) - HE the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Ahmed bin Abdullah al Mahmoud said the Darfur peace negotiations will resume in Doha before the end of this May, specifically in the last week of the month. This came after talks held by HE the Minister and the UN-AU Joint Mediator Djibril Bassole with the Sudanese government negotiating team, headed by Dr. Amin Hassan Omar. HE the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs said the Mediation discussed with the Sudanese government delegation, the agenda of the forthcoming negotiations, and will send invitations to the concerned parties including the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) to start the negotiations before the end of this month. HE the Minister al Mahmoud said that the Sudanese government delegation stressed Khartoum’s continuing negotiations to achieve peace in Darfur.
HE the Minister of State for Foreign affairs Ahmed bin Abdullah Al Mahmoud described in remarks to reporters the Mediation meeting with the Sudanese government negotiating team as "positive and venue for consultation, during which the delegation stressed the continuation in the negotiations to achieve peace in Darfur. On a question about the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) saying about the bias of the Mediation with the government of Sudan, HE the Minister said: "We say that any mediation should take things like this ... the Mediation position is clear, and this could be talked about my brother Djibrill Bassole, but from our side as hosting country , we are dealing equally and fairly with all, we open our hearts for all in order to reach the peace that achieves security and stability in Darfur, HE the Minister added. Responding to a question by Qatar News Agency (QNA) on the ongoing military acts in Darfur between the Government forces and the forces of Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) and their negative impact on the negotiating process, HE. Ahmed bin Abdullah Al Mahmoud called on these parties to maintain calm and restraint and to address such matters through negotiations in order to reach solutions that achieve peace in Darfur.. and said "As you always, that such matters were not the way to achieve peace." On whether the visit by a delegation from the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) to Cairo was a move by Egypt to find an alternative to Doha platform, or as an Egyptian effort to complete Qatar''s efforts, HE the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs said that Egypt is a member of the Arab Ministerial and African Ministerial Committee on Darfur and had taken a clear decision that the negotiations should be in Doha in order to reach peace. HE AL Mahmoud added in this context: "We believe that any effort to help bring peace and make negotiations a success is welcomed. As I said earlier, we are working with our brothers members of the Arab and African Ministerial Committee and in this context we are working." he stressed.
