ArticleMainBodyHTML1:
Doha, May 18 (QNA) - Doha Film Institute (DFI) announced Saturday that its annual slate will now include two film festivals. Films from first- and second-time filmmakers are the focus of the new Qumra Film Festival, Doha.
The inaugural festival will take place in March, 2014 and will include international competition sections for feature-length and short films, and provide opportunities for creative collaboration among filmmakers and industry professionals. The Ajyal Film Festival for the Young is a community-based event that brings cinema and film-related activities to Doha to promote film appreciation among families and educators. Its first edition takes place in November, 2013.
"Over the last four years, our community-based programming has been extremely popular among the residents of Doha," said CEO of DFI Abdulaziz Al Khater. "We want to harness the momentum weve generated there and continue developing film appreciation in Qatar. At the same time, the Institute has decided to focus on emerging filmmakers and expand its competitions to include films from around the world. The best path to achieving our goals is to build two separate film festivals."
The Qumra Film Festival, Doha is committed to exploring the imagination and lyrical visions of upcoming directors, helping them to bring their projects to fruition and providing a launchpad for their work. International competitions for first- and second-time filmmakers are at the heart of the eight-day festival. Awards will be decided by international juries in feature-length and short film categories, including Made in Qatar.
Out-of-competition sections include a panorama of films from contemporary auteurs, established directors and new talent, selected for their artistry, formal innovation and compelling subject matter; a carte-blanche section that invites acclaimed directors to share films that played a role in shaping their cinematic sensibility; and a tribute that pays homage to the contributions of significant figures to the history of world cinema. Extending its focus on directors early works, the Qumra Film Festival also provides a rare chance to see the first films of celebrated filmmakers.

Industry Days will include master classes, workshops, panels and the Doha Projects initiative, which puts together DFI grant recipients with producers and key players from the film industry. Exhibitions and musical performances complement the film programme throughout the festival.
Recently appointed to the post of Artistic Advisor for DFI, world-renowned filmmaker Elia Suleiman said: "The intention is clear and sincere to build a cinematic house of culture, anchored to the principle of hope. I believe we can find the essence of such hope in the new generations of visual poets from around the globe. Today this is an ecological necessity."
In November, the five-day Ajyal Film Festival for the Young builds on DFI's history of community-based programming, bringing generations together and offering them film-related activities and events that will inspire creative interaction. The festival gives hundreds of young people the opportunity to sit on the juries that decide the winners of Ajyal's competition, which is presented in three age-appropriate programmes. Family-friendly special screenings, thematic retrospectives and tributes round out the film selection, while master classes for students of all ages, workshops for children, parents, teachers and industry professionals and panels enhance film education.
"We have designed Ajyal to enhance film education and make it a lot of fun by engaging families and educators through cinema," said Fatma Al Remaihi, the Festival Director of the Ajyal Film Festival for the Young and DFI's Head of Programmes. "At the same time, we want to open a space for dialogue about the complex issues facing youth today and to empower them by giving them a platform for expression. It's an investment in today's youth so it's really an investment in the Qatar of the future."

ArticleMainBodyHTML1: Doha, May 15 (QNA) - Faisal Mohamed Al Suwaidi, the President of Research and Development (RD) at Qatar Foundation, has affirmed that Qatar National Research Strategy (QNRS) forum of 2013 which is being held for the second year in a row , aims at reviewing the QNRS after being ratified last year on part of HH Sheikha Moza Bint Nasser , the chairperson of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development (QF) and QF's board of directors to get assured it is going on the right path and as per the right priorities .
Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday on the sidelines of the two-day forum being held at Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC), Al-Suwaidi said the story of researches started with the choice by HH Sheikha Moza of "Zruna" company which conducted an integrated study to the research sector in Qatar and reported to HH Sheikha Moza at the end of 2011 where the report was endorsed in December 2011 and we switched it to the QNRS in consultation with all staff at the Research and Development in Qatar.
He further said," We will set the priorities and then submit them to HH Sheikha Moza and the QF's board of directors once again for endorsement and to put it into action and finance it.
The President of Research and Development (RD) at Qatar Foundation mad clear that during today's meetings consultations were made with the research and development personnel where we define the most challenges facing Qatar in the 10 or 20 years to come in this sector and which include lack of manpower, the matter which made us reduce the 76 research target to 12 targets where 3 to 4 goals will be selected during this forum.
The other targets will not be abolished but will go back to next year and try to rearrange them as per priorities and we will choose a number of them each year, said Al Suwaidi.
Speaking about the most important challenges facing the research sector, Al Suwaidi pointed out that of the prime challenges we face are saving human energy whereas the financial aspect poses no problem, especially after His Highness the Emir Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani, has allocated 2.8% of the national income annually for the research sector.
Al Suwaidi further told reporters that the forum will highlight the value of fostering a national research culture. This is in line with Qatar National Vision 2030 and is designed to have a significantly positive impact on the country's development by addressing the most pressing challenges facing Qatar and the region.
He made clear that there are about 500 researchers in Qatar working with the QF, the Educational City and Qatar University and other locations whereas we are in need of 7000 researchers to realize the targets of Qatar National Vision 2030. This constitutes a major challenge over the coming years and we have to overcome it through recruiting scientists from abroad and at the same time training and educating the Qatari cadres of males and females to encourage them to join this sector, Al Suwaidi told reporters.
Elaborating he said, "We are determined to align all of our science and research objectives with stakeholder priorities, capabilities and interests by facilitating an environment that allows them to engage with one another and find applicable solutions to some of the research challenges that we face today."
"Qatar Foundation is steadfast in its commitment to plan and manage its research investments in order to fulfill the objectives within the Qatar National Research Strategy and overcome potential obstacles along the way," Al Suwaiti told reporters.
Aimed at tackling the nation's most pressing research challenges, Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development hosted today the Qatar National Research Strategy Forum 2013, in collaboration with The New York Academy of Sciences.
The two-day forum brings together leading stakeholders from across Qatar National Research Strategy's (QNRS) key sectors, including academia, government, and research institutes.
The forum has been created to provide stakeholders with an ideal platform to advance the nation's research objective of becoming an international centre for research and development by identifying, discussing, and confronting a host of pertinent challenges.
For his part, Michael Goldrich, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of The New York Academy of Sciences, said in similar remarks the he will present participants with an overview of the research 'Grand Challenges' that Qatar is facing today. During a series of working groups, stakeholders will actively engage in the deliberations on how to overcome these challenges.
In keeping with the objectives of Qatar National Research Strategy (QNRS), which was launched last October, the forum also aims to provide researchers with the opportunity to network and cooperate on future research projects, nationally and internationally.
QNRS was developed to guide all R&D investments in Qatar and provides the national framework to align singular objectives alongside the country's priorities, while taking into consideration stakeholder capabilities and interests. It represents the first R&D sector-wide strategy in Qatar and defines five pillars or themes to achieve the country's aspirations: Energy and Environment; Information and Computing Technology; Health and related Life Science and Technologies; Social sciences, Arts and Humanities; as well as enterprise-wide interdisciplinary research and development.
The strategy, which is being implemented by Qatar Foundation's research institutes, universities, service providers, government, industry and funders, is expected to nurture and enhance the cycle of innovation from university research through to commercialization. Another of the strategy's long-term goals is to increase the ratio of researchers in Qatar's workforce by developing capabilities and building a competitive and diversified economy.
Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development is a private, non-profit organisation that is supporting Qatar on its journey from carbon economy to knowledge economy by unlocking human potential for the benefit of not only Qatar, but the world.
Founded in 1995 by HH the Emir Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani, QF is chaired by Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser. QF carries out its mission through three strategic pillars: education, science and research, and community development. QFs education pillar brings world-class universities to Qatar to help create an education sector in which young people can develop the attitudes and skills required for a knowledge economy.
Whereas The New York Academy of Sciences is an independent, not for-profit organization that since 1817 has been committed to advancing science, technology, and society worldwide. With 25,000 members in 140 countries, the Academy is creating a global community of science for the benefit of humanity. The Academy's core mission is to advance scientific knowledge, positively impact the major global challenges of society with science-based solutions, and increase the number of scientifically informed individuals in society at large.
ArticleMainBodyImage1:

ArticleMainBodyHTML1: Doha, May 14 (QNA) - Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF) has announced new research grants worth a total of $121 million today, under its flagship funding program, the National Priorities Research Program (NPRP).
The announcement came in QNRF's fifth Annual Forum, held today at Qatar National Convention Centre, where more than 350 members of Qatar's research community gathered to learn the results of proposals submitted for the sixth cycle of the NPRP.
"The National Priorities Research Program was created to support original research for Qatar on topics of national importance, and to bolster the nation's growing research culture. This cycle placed particular emphasis on alignment with the Qatar National Research Strategy and on local research collaboration, with bonus points awarded to proposals involving stakeholders from Qatar's academic, government, non-profit, and industrial sectors," said Dr Abdul Sattar Al-Taie, Executive Director at QNRF.
Twenty-seven local research institutions have received funding for a total of 137 proposals, out of the 710 proposals submitted to NPRP's sixth cycle in January 2013. These proposals were selected on a competitive basis and underwent a rigorous evaluation process. Each proposal was sent to five independent international peer reviewers, who shared their evaluation with QNRF for a final funding decision.
"With a 20 percent success rate, NPRP's sixth cycle demonstrates the rising quality of research in Qatar. Grants were awarded based on QNRF's strict criteria that take into account originality and quality of the research proposed, alignment with the Qatar National Research Strategy, potential benefits to Qatar and the region, and collaboration with other institutions in Qatar, in addition to the peer reviewers' recommendations," said Noor Al-Merekhi, Program Manager of NPRP.
Thirty-three of the awarded proposals involve collaboration with local stakeholders, and 97 percent of them are directly aligned with the four pillars of the Qatar National Research Strategy (QNRS), namely: energy and environment, computer science and ICT, health and social sciences, arts and humanities.
"The success rate within each QNRS pillar was also approximately 20 percent, reflective of QNRF's commitment to excellence in research and development across these fields, which have been identified as priorities within Qatar's research efforts," added Al-Merekhi, who announced the results on behalf of QNRF.
Al-Merekhi went on to explain how the research grants would be managed throughout their lifecycle of up to three years. Each grant is worth between $120,000 and $1.05 million, with a requirement that at least 65 percent of the annual budget is expended inside Qatar. Likewise, 50 percent of the total research efforts must be conducted in Qatar.
"NPRP encourages collaboration not only among stakeholders in Qatar, but also between Qatar and the international research community. The opportunities that NPRP provides to researchers outside of Qatar are unique, and have attracted attention from some of the world's top scientific minds," said Dr Al-Taie, who noted that 147 international research institutions from 26 countries will be collaborating in projects awarded under the Program's sixth cycle.
The announcement of NPRP grants marked the culmination of the fifth Annual Forum's proceedings, which also included a series of presentations by QNRF's senior management around the theme 'Researchforward', in a reflection of the funding agency's new phase of development. Senior representatives shared QNRF's five-year plan, featuring new programs already underway and the Fund's renewed focus on research outcomes and dissemination.
QNRF also recognised funded researchers and Research Offices, with the Best Research Team Award going to Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar and Best Research Office Award going to Texas A&M University at Qatar. The Best Researcher Award, introduced this year, went to Dr Khalid Ali Qarage of Texas A&M University at Qatar.
In a special show of appreciation, Dr Nabeel Al-Salem and Fatema Sorore were both honoured for their service to QNRF, which has extended for beyond five years.
ArticleMainBodyHTML1: Doha, May 13 (QNA) - Qatar Foundation (QF) for Education, Science and Community Development will host here the Qatar National Research Strategy Forum 2013, in collaboration with The New York Academy of Sciences.
The two-day forum, which will be held on May 15 and 16 May at the Qatar National Convention Centre, will assemble leading stakeholders from Qatar National Research Strategy's (QNRS) key sectors, including academia, government, and research institutes, the QF said Monday.
The forum has been created to provide stakeholders with an ideal platform to advance the nation's research objective of becoming an international centre for research and development by identifying, discussing, and confronting a host of pertinent challenges.
QR Research and Development President Faisal M. Al Suwaidi will highlight the value of fostering a national research culture in his opening address.
The push for research conforms to Qatar National Vision 2030 and will address the most pressing challenges facing Qatar and the region.
"We are determined to align all of our science and research objectives with stakeholder priorities, capabilities and interests by facilitating an environment that allows them to engage with one another and find applicable solutions to some of the research challenges that we face today," said Al Suwaidi and added, "Qatar Foundation is steadfast in its commitment to plan and manage its research investments in order to fulfill the objectives within the Qatar National Research Strategy and overcome potential obstacles along the way."
The New York Academy of Sciences Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Michael Goldrich will present participants with an overview of the research 'Grand Challenges' that Qatar is facing today. During a series of working groups, stakeholders will actively engage in the deliberations on how to overcome these challenges.
In keeping with the objectives of QNRS, which was launched last October, the forum also aims to provide researchers with the opportunity to network and cooperate on future research projects, nationally and internationally.
QNRS was developed to guide all R&D investments in Qatar and provides the national framework to align singular objectives alongside the country's priorities, while taking into consideration stakeholder capabilities and interests.
It represents the first R&D sector-wide strategy in Qatar and defines five pillars or themes to achieve the countrys aspirations: Energy and Environment; Information and Computing Technology; Health and related Life Science and Technologies; Social sciences, Arts and Humanities; as well as enterprise-wide interdisciplinary research and development.
The strategy, which is being implemented by QF's research institutes, universities, service providers, government, industry and funders, is expected to nurture and enhance the cycle of innovation from university research through to commercialisation.
One other long-term goal of the strategy is to increase the ratio of researchers in Qatar's workforce by developing capabilities and building a competitive and diversified economy, the QF said.
